There is just something about a statement necklace that I will always adore; maybe it's the fact they they make being stylish look easy. Pinterest, oh Pinterest. My new favorite time-suck. I've spent a lot of hours "pinning" this, that and all in-between. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, Pinterest is basically a visual bookmarking site where you create your own "boards" and then store your favorite ideas on them - recipes, fashion, decorating tips, weddings, babies, DIYs - make a board for anything you want!

Well, I decided it was time to make this habit valuable and actually use/do/make some of the fun things on my boards. So, my first "pin pick" is: no-bake energy bites via Smashed Peas and Carrots blog! As you've probably gathered over the years, I never talk about food and simply, am not a cook. However, I am talented at mixing, which is why I pinned this recipe. Such an easy snack to make, I actually made my second batch this weekend. I take two to work each day and eat one around 10 and one around 2...just at those times when I need a pick me up. They are extremely satisfying, on the healthy side and super easy; but fair warning, the flaxseed will definitely regulate you...if you know what I mean :)

It probably sounds strange that anyone would ever want to put something in their hair with the word "oil" in it, but trust me, this stuff is wonderful. I'm sure you've seen MoroccanOil around...it's won a ton of beauty awards, is always featured in magazines and the packaging is eye-catching (the turquoise and brown combo reminds me of the beach...ahh, love).

Here's how it works -- after your shower, just apply a small amount of this ultra-light formula to damp hair and style as usual. I rub it more on the ends of my hair; not so much the roots since I don't wash every day (dry shampoo ladies, a post on that later). You won't even feel it on your hair but it is hydrating, protecting, repairing and de-frizzing all at once. I rarely finish an entire bottle of any hair product (because I usually get bored and try other things), but my first bottle of MoroccanOil Treatment is just about gone and I can't wait to replenish at my next hair appointment. My advice - try out the travel size to see if you like it (you will) - it's only $16 here!

I have some fun shopping news to share -- my current favorite store - ZARA - (as mentioned previously here) is launching online shopping today in the US!! Yes, it is now possible to get beautiful, trendy clothes at affordable prices from the comfort of your own couch. A big reason I am super excited about the online option - shoes. I wear a 10 (i.e. big foot) which equates to a 41 in the Zara size chart. I can rarely find 41's in store, so crossing fingers for a large online shoe department with all sizes - big, small and in-between.

More on my Zara love: two weeks ago on a trip to Philadelphia (that's a long story - essentially Hurricane Irene forced us to evacuate our one and only beach vacay at the Jersey shore, so we stayed in Philly instead, yada, yada) and I ended up shopping. My hair is in pretty decent shape right now; probably the best shape it's been in since I was ten years old and pre my first perm. It's amazing what prenatal pills and female hormones do during pregnancy! Although, this week I've started to experience the "holy-moly-hair-loss" phase. I heard the stories ladies, but really, does it all have to fall out just when it gets good?

I decided to treat the hair left on my head, and with urging from my stylist bought Bumble and Bumble's Creme de Coco Masque. SO rich, so moisturizing - this tropical butter sensation is honestly like the best thing I've ever put on my hair. The end result - super soft and moisturized hair; which is so key given all the damage caused by coloring and the summer sun. You only need to use it once a week - for seven minutes - so just massage on and let soak in while you shave your legs in the shower :)

I've wanted to try these after reading rave reviews on many other blogs. Sally Hansen's Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips sound like a dream - a simple peel and apply process with no dry time, and lasts for ten days - sign me up! So I gave it a shot and must say, I'm a big fan! It takes a little while to get used to applying them, but once you get the hang of it - it's pretty easy. I'm typing this ten days after application and they still look good (much better that a regular manicure would) even after washing tons of dishes and giving baby baths. The strips come in lots of designs and colors and retail for about $10 a set. You can get them at most every drugstore, Target or online. Lately, I've seen them at CVS for buy one, get one free! They come with easy, detailed instructions but here's a summary of how they work:

Available in tons of colors - I chose gold glitter. Set includes 8 strips for each hand, so pick the ones that match your nail size best. Push cuticles down with stick provided and remove all nail polish.

Peel off sticky back, line up with cuticle line and fold over ridge of nail. Then pull off the excess strip and file the remainder down.


Not on instructions, but I read that other bloggers added a clear top coat to finish the strips off, so I followed suit. And Voila - gold glittery nails!

Since the strips are real nail polish, just remove with regular ol' nail polish remover. So fun and long-lasting! Next design I'm trying - Cut It Out!

Can't believe I'm typing this already, but I'm headed back to work today. I feel like I was just prepping for my maternity leave and now - poof - I'm back! What an amazing, crazy, exhausting, unbelievable, fun and fast three months it has been.

Yesterday I rummaged through my closet to find my outfit for today (it kinda felt like dressing for the first day of school when I was 5) and came to the sad realization that nothing fits...like nothing. I got accustomed to my lululemon pants/tanks and forgot that I'm in that terrible stage where my regular old clothes are too tight and maternity clothes are too big. So yes, I am the one wearing jeans in 100 degree weather because it's my only option. UGH.

Luckily, a few weeks ago I went shoe shopping on Piperlime, so at least I will have cute footwear during this awkward, in-between clothing stage. We have a casual dress code, but I still like to wear heels mixed in with some fun sandals in the summer. I'm a huge fan of all three pairs and highly recommend!

I ventured to a mall last week for the first time in forever. Overall, I was disappointed in the selection of clothes at my favorite stores, except for one - Zara! I received a Zara gift card for Christmas 2009, and still had yet to spend it because I was never crazy about anything - until last week when I spent all my funds. Great colors, simple patterns and wearable clothes for a great price is what you will find there right now. I walked away with two tops and this $60 striped tunic dress that I plan to wear to my sister's rehearsal dinner tonight! This frock is great for all seasons - with sandals in the summer or tights and heels in the fall - and also totally work appropriate. My love for Zara has been renewed.

p.s. I've seen Kate and Pippa in a ton of Zara pieces lately. My new slogan when I shop -- WWKW (What would Kate wear?) because she can do no wrong in my fashion book. Can't wait to see what she wears on her trip to LA in a few weeks!

We've all read that beauty products go bad (see this article for typical shelf lives). Yeah, umm, that's a little scary. I don't really follow those guidelines...I swear I've had this one eye shadow palette for five years because I've convinced myself I will use the colors some day. Basic jist of this post - I desperately needed new everyday makeup so that was what the hubs got me as a birthday gift (well, I planted the idea in his head multiple times). I officially have a new obsession...Rent the Runway. I blogged about it last year in this post, but hadn't used it at the time. Well, we had a special occasion on Sunday - baby's baptism - and since I am still losing the pregnancy weight I did not want to spend any money on a new dress, but still wanted something fun and in style. I mean, lots of pictures were to be taken! The entire experience was fantastic. Browsed the website and picked the dress I wanted - chose two sizes - and picked my 4-day rental period. I did get a call last Thursday that they were out of one of the sizes in my chosen dress, so they let me choose a second dress for free. And I ended up liking that one better! So all in all, I wore a $325 Tibi dress for $50! HIGHLY recommend this website; great customer service and amazing dresses. My only tidbit - rent early as the cute dresses book up fast. Working out at home started at an early age when my sister and I desperately wanted "Get in Shape, Girl" for Christmas. Headbands, leg warmers, velcro weights and swirling ribbons? Duh, sign us up. My mom has a picture of us all decked out in our leotards doing leg lifts on our pink mats. And I think we probably weighed like 50 lbs at the time. Classic. For all you 30-somethings like me, you will remember this commercial from the 80's...

Anyway, fast forward to current day and some things don't change; I still have a pink mat AND I still like to work out at home (especially now with baby). So my overall review of Body by Bethenny = two thumbs up! Why? Because it works up a sweat, but doesn't kick your butt, which means I won't dread doing it again. And Bethenny is her normal funny self throughout the whole video, adding a bit of comedy to the process. The video consists of a 40 minute yoga portion, 10 minutes of arm weights and a 5 minute booty bonus. Never done yoga? This is a great video to start with. So far, I've done it 5 out of the last 7 days and already feel my arms getting stronger and overall, just more comfortable in my yoga poses. So try it out and let me know what you think! I got it on sale at Target for $10 or pick it up at Amazon here for $12.

Before I write my review on Bethenny's workout DVD, I thought it more suitable to first review her Skinnygirl Margarita, since exercise will need to be performed because we drank too many margaritas to begin with :)

Overall review - I'm a fan! I mean, who doesn't like a margarita on a hot summer day? The bottle is "pour 'n serve" so the tequila is already included. It has somewhat of a pre-made margarita mix taste, so to mix it up I like to combine a little bit of Fresca to soften the tartness and then squeeze in lime juice to add some freshness. Another plus: the packaging is adorable and makes a great hostess gift for your girlfriends. Skinnygirl runs about $12-$14 a bottle and you can pick it up just about anywhere nowadays = happy cocktailing!

I'm heading back to work in a few weeks (I hate saying "back to work" since being with baby is so much work too; let's go with "back to the corporate world" instead) and that means it's time to stock up on cardigans since the office is always soo cold. I swung into Banana Republic last Friday and all full-priced women's apparel was 40% off so I picked up the two sweaters above. The open-placket weekend cardy on top and textured flutter cardy on bottom both have a summertime look and feel with some texture to add warmth and richness to the look. Oh, and I think both look way better in person than in these pictures. BR has lots of great cardigans right now - check them all out here.

My random weekend trek to Target resulted in a bunch of under-the-sink and closet organizers (this week's project), the Body by Bethenny yoga DVD (trying this morning and will let you know how it is) and shockingly, only one piece of clothing - this ombre plaid tunic - on sale for $15. It has a lightweight and summery feel, fits true to size and I think it will be so cute with either jeans and flip flops or shorts and wedge sandals. I picked it up in blue (of course) but it's also available in purple and orange - such a steal!

Who doesn't love a sleeping baby?

As a first time parent you receive a lot of great advice leading up to the birth of your little one. A lot of it goes in one ear and out the other until you have the actual baby in your arms and then you want people to remind you what they told you (well, at least I did). Right before I left work, my boss' sole advice: "swaddle tight Jenni". And although I remembered this, I didn't really know what he was talking about. But I quickly learned...

So, yep, we made a crucial first-time parenting mistake which caused us hours upon hours of endless walking, bouncing, and swaying our little baby to sleep - only to lay him down, tip toe out of the room and hear -- whaaa whaaa! Trust me, nothing is more frustrating than working so hard to get a baby to sleep and he wakes up the minute you lay him down. Our HUGE mistake - we stopped swaddling after the first week. Why? He would cry, kick and scream and we thought he hated it. Little did I know, babies don't know what's best in their new world, the parents do.

Desperate, and after three weeks of no sleep, I rented The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD from the library. I won't go into all the details but two things I learned: 1. Babies don't know what to do with their arms and therefore, wake themselves up when they flail. So swaddling and containing their arms, like in the womb, is one of the best soothing techniques to use during the first three months (the 4th trimester as Dr. Karp calls it) and 2. I will give this invaluable DVD to any of my first-time mom friends.

Because our little guy is strong and breaks out of every swaddle blanket out there, we prefer using swaddlers. How do they measure up? Here's my review - and I must say thanks to Ben for being a fantastic blog model :)

Miracle Blanket: $32

Name rings true - I'd call this a miracle. It's expensive, but by far our favorite, as this thing is virtually break-free! Since it has the extra step of folding the small flaps around each arm to hold them down, it takes a little more time than the others to put on, but it's the only one, come nighttime, that we put him in to sleep. The videos on their website show best how to put on. Love it.

Halo SleepSack Swaddle: $21

We just got this one, and it's a little big for Ben, but I do like the concept. It's basically a sleep sack with two extra velcro panels to swaddle around him. A nice plus is that once baby can sleep unswaddled, you can still use this as a blanket without wrapping the panels.

Summer Infant Kiddopotomus Swaddle Me: $12

We use this during the day for naps. It's quick and easy to slip on with the velcro strips. However, his little hands can break out of it, which is why we don't use it at night. We also use this when we don't want to swaddle his legs, for example, when he's in the swing.

Woombie: $26

By far the easiest to use - just zip up the little pea pod and voila! It's designed to hug the baby yet still let them move their extremities, like in the womb. We are just starting to use this one more now that he is nine weeks, simply because it allows for more movement than the others since it doesn't pin the arms at the side. However, as I type this, he is swinging away and sleeping in his Woombie (photo on top)!

Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend! The weather was crazy in Chicago ranging from strong rain and thunderstorms on Sunday to a sunny and hot ninety degrees yesterday. Hopefully the heat is here to stay -- and keeping in that summer spirit, I decided to try out Essie's newest shades! I've been experimenting with different colors lately so went with shimmery violet Smooth Sailing on my toes and sea foam green Absolutely Shore on my fingers...LOVE both:

Last night I was reminded how much I love the social media world we live in today. Here's what happened: I was browsing twitter and noticed a tweet about a friend taking a "stay"cation at the Peninsula Chicago. When it comes to opening a bottle of wine, we've never been traditional corkscrew users. And after years of using the Rabbit, we wanted to spend even less time on this task and decided to try this Emerson Electric Wine Opener from Target. So last Christmas, I bought it for my husband (well, and me; joint gifts are ok, right?) and since then, it's pretty much been used daily. My mom and I walked over to Anthropologie this weekend and I got to pick out a few things for my birthday tomorrow :) One of my favorite purchases is this striped jersey maxi dress by Puella. It' sooo flattering, super comfortable, and not at all tight or clingy. It's in the lounge section of their website and labeled a "chemise", but I definitely think this flowy dress is perfect for your casual summer wardrobe. I chose the striped grey color, but it's also available in raspberry, oatmeal and navy stripes. I can't wait to wear it all summer long!

There is not much I miss about being nine months pregnant except for one major thing: people being kind. Not kidding, I've never been treated better than during those last few weeks while carrying around that big ol' belly. Maybe people felt sorry for me (!), but regardless, it was really nice to be on the receiving end of kindness. Fast forward to this week and wow, how quickly things change:

1. Took baby for a walk in the stroller (which is still an ordeal and very stressful for me!) and struggled trying to open the door to a coffee shop. The people inside stared; no one helped me and after deciding I couldn't do it alone facing forward, backed out and squeezed my way in another direction, causing total unnecessary commotion at the door and me to sweat profusely in embarrassment.

2. Whole Foods is a block away, so I strapped on the Ergo, and baby and I went to pick up a few things. Two RuMe bags full of groceries later and baby carrier still on front, a car honks at me while in the crosswalk (yes, I had the walk sign) and scoffs at me to hurry up. Are you kidding me dude? Can you even see me under all of this stuff I am carrying?

This drastic swing over just a few short weeks made me think - why aren't people kind to each other always? Be it pregnant or not, child or not - just be nice. So this weekend, whether it's a quick smile at a passerby, holding the door open for a stranger or giving that random someone a compliment on their outfit, go out of your way to be kind. It will be appreciated and remembered, I promise!

My love for anything that has to do with Lauren Conrad hasn't ceased...I love her style, her makeup, her hair...she might be my fave "celebrity" (rivaled only by that of Bethenny Frankel). I ventured to Kohl's last week to check out her latest collection - which now in addition to the clothing includes shoes, sunglasses, and jewelry! I'm still not in a clothes shopping mood but did pick up these adorable canvas bow platform espadrilles. Super comfy and really like that the heel strap hits low enough that it doesn't cut off your leg. On the tag LC suggests pairing these with wide leg jeans and a white tank...sounds good to me!

A few months ago my flat iron just stopped working. No warning, no nothing; one morning I was just left to stare in the mirror at my semi-wavy, frizzy, puffy hair. Crisis! Luckily I had saved a spare one, which got me through a few days, and then decided to run to Target, figuring the $30 straightners must be decent nowadays. I picked one out and was excited running it through my hair for the first time. But 30 seconds in I knew I would be hitting the returns counter. It just didn't heat up nearly as hot as needed to get my hair flat - I mean, that's the point, right?

I decided to do some research and after reading the rave reviews on Amazon, I scooped up this 1 inch BaByliss ultra-thin straightning iron. I'm a Bravo junkie. I watch and re-watch most every show on the network; it's the best guilty pleasure TV. When 'Pregnant in Heels' debuted a few weeks ago, I clearly had to tune in. And although I love the show's concept, it does seem a little scripted to me. Does anyone think the same thing? And something else that has always baffled me -- where is Rosie Pope from? I can't figure out her voice and actually googled her one day to discover she is from London. Fellow viewers, it's not a typical British accent, right? Well, SNL was right on point last Saturday night and called this out - a must watch below with the best line "...and every morning a thousand bees sting my tongue"...love it!

In 2009 when I saw Jennifer Anniston in this Calypso St. Barth's dress, I immediately subscribed to their emails in hopes of achieving the same carefree style. I love the wispy and beachy look of their clothes, but have never bought anything as the prices are just a tad out of my price range. Lucky for us, Calypso collaborated with Target and the line is in stores now! This cute little froggy is the reason why I last blogged nine months ago today. I never intended to leave my Louise Loves It readers hanging with a final post about my love for a striped cardigan. But last summer, in the middle of a very sick first trimester, I decided to suddenly end LLI when it was determined that sleeping was more important than blogging. And to be honest, I didn't really shop or do much over the course of the last nine months, so I wouldn't have had much to write about anyway! Btw, my hubby loved this shopping hiatus and has been very happy with the status of our bank account during this time! But, all things must come to an end :)

So, moving forward and balancing baby, work, and life in general, LLI is going to be a part-time gig and I will post when I have something fun to share. I will most likely write a lot about babies and mommyhood too - since that's now my focus. But it's good to be back in the blogosphere. I hope 2011 is treating you well and thanks for sticking with me!

Two boys under her belt, my best friend Sarah recently had her first little girl, Scarlett, whom I have the extreme honor of being godmother too! Yay! I had last Saturday entirely to myself and spent about five hours finishing up the wildly popular 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett. Highly recommend this wonderful read about the interwoven lives of three women living through the early civil rights movement in 1960's Mississippi. What I loved most - the way Stockett relates the characters to how we interact today; truly identifying the emotions of sarcasm, humor, pain, while clearly displaying three points of view from one unforgettable era in our history. Registering for a wedding is super fun but can also be quite overwhelming. You don't want to register for too much, or too little, and you want stuff you will actually use for years. Besides the normal place settings, linens, crystal and china, I want to recommend a few items we use ALL the time:

It's always fun to re-dress the bed. A good bet is one that's a solid color and not too masculine or feminine; adding texture makes it fun.
We went for this set (in natural) from West Elm and I still love it.

When else are you going to say you want a vacuum besides on your registry? I've been meaning to blog about my iRobot Roomba love for months...we simply press the button and the little guy works his way around our house - easily transitioning from hardwood to carpet - and then docks when it's tired (don't tell anyone but sometimes when we are bored, we just watch it!). It's totally worth the $ and you will be amazed (and slightly grossed out) at the amount of dust it picks up. Use a Bed, Bath & Beyond 20% off coupon for the best price!

I have a newfound appreciation for freshly ground spices. This is our exact salt and pepper mill set from Macy's. A best buy!

Guys don't want much besides drink glasses and grill tools. The Grill Daddy is awesome and we - well, make that "he" -uses it multiple times a week. Fill it up with water and it cleans your grill top with steam....it's totally an "as-seen-on-tv" product but it works and it's cheap --watch the demo video on the link!

A solid knife set is simply a must. We went for the Wusthof 7-piece set...the quality is amazing and 100% worth the money.

I received these two special gifts at my bridal showers; both intended to be sewn into my wedding dress for the big day. I had never seen these traditions prior to that, and now intend to pass them down -- because these small, sentimental keepsakes meant so much in the midst of it all.

Monogrammed wedding dress label

Love this personal touch on a most special dress. I especially heart that it's the last thing that shows my maiden name. Personalize it however you choose and have your seamstress sew it into the back of your dress. My girlfriends got mine above from Monograms by Emily in NYC. They don't have a website but you can reach them at 212-924-4486. Labels take a few weeks to make and are $45, shipped to you. I also found a bunch of sellers on Etsy that make something similar. (note, maybe not the best idea if you intend to sell your dress post ceremony!)

Keepsake Wedding Hanky Bonnet

My mother-in-law presented me with the bonnet Chris wore when he was baptized. The intention was to have it sewn into my wedding dress and I loved it! Again, I found many Etsy sellers that make these here. I had mine placed underneath a few layers toward the bottom of the dress...no one could see it, but I knew it was there. Such a great baby gift too! The best is the poem that accompanied it:

I'm just a little hanky,

as square as square can be.

But with a stitch or two,

they made a bonnet out of me.

I'll be worn from the hospital,

or on a christening day,

Then I'll be carefully pressed,

and neatly packed away.

It was a great weekend in Chicago - our friends Nick and Annie visited from Austin, TX and we really enjoyed the city...which we often forget to do. Thanks for the fantastic question E! Such an important and fashionable summer accessory that keeps us cool, blocks the sun and most importantly, protects our hair color from fading! Some options:

Floppy Straw Hat -- classic, easy to fold, super chic. I don't suggest anything too big and floppy; I have one and it covers my eyes = not a fan. Best bets above: Free People's stretchy knit sun hat ($48) and J. Jill's brimmed straw hat ($39).

Straw Fedora -- super in trend and stylish but doesn't fold easy, so can be a tad difficult to pack. Faves above: the more traditional Nordstrom grosgrain bow straw fedora available in eight colors ($28) and Anthropologie's Blurred Lines fedora ($38).

I've used the same pricey mascara for that last five years, but recently decided to mix it up, spend less and try out the highly advertised CoverGirl LashBlast mascara...and I am a fan! Love the volume enhancing brush, no clumps during application and especially the fact that I don't see smudges by the end of the work day. I bought the orange, non-waterproof, "volume blasting" version but if you want to focus on a different characteristic, try the lengthening yellow, fusion (length+volume) blue, or luxe (shimmery) pink. ...it's my birthday! Ahh...I love this day :) I'm celebrating tonight with my mom and sister at a concert and then headed out to a Cubs game tomorrow night with some co-workers. And the fact that it is supposed to be in the 80's all week leading into a three day holiday weekend = yes! I gotta feeling...it's gonna be a good week.

Although 364 days out of the the year I am a bargain shopper, I did have a few little splurges on my birthday wish list. Problem is, I bought them for myself already. Oops! Finally got my first pair of Tory Burch Reva flats, given the online sale last week (which is still going on). And back in March I told myself if I did yoga eight weeks in a row, I could treat myself to a pair of the coveted lululemon groove pants...goal accomplished, pants purchased. Over the last few years I have acquired a new found love for greenery. I've managed to keep a Christmas poinsettia alive for six months, my two house plants are thriving after quite some time indoors and caring for my rooftop flowers has become my favorite summer hobby. I saw this herb pot wire caddy at Crate and Barrel and loved the idea of it perched in my kitchen windowsill...I mean, the little chalkboard markers are just too dang cute. But my hubby reminded me that I rarely cook, and therefore do not need to be growing fresh herbs...so I didn't make the purchase.
